I’m planning to have a trip in Tibet with my husband in May, 2004. Is it the good time to travel in Tibet? We will have had 5 days there. However, we consider that the first thing we should do is to get a good itinerary. Can anybody show me a suggestion? Any suggestion about Travel in Tibet is warmly welcome! Thanks in advance!

If you are planning your first travel to Tibet, you'd better start from Lhasa. You have to fly to Lhasa from Chengdu or take bus from Xining. As for hotel, that really depends on your budget. If you have enough money, you can choose top-end hotel like Lhasa Hotel (former Holiday Inn).

If you really wann to go to Tibet, i suggest you'd better book a tour with travel agency, since it takes time for you yourself to apply for a Tibet Travel Permit.

I went there last year flying from Beijing to Lhasa. Our agency aranged everything smoothly. My families were very satisfied with their service. If i'm right in memory, you could find them by serching Tibet trip or something like tibet travel in google.

Hello Mebal,

To enter Lhasa you need the Tibet Permit which I think you need to ask for a travel agency's help to handle this for you. And you may first fly into Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, XI'an, or Guangzhou, there are direct flights available to Lhasa in these cities. It is better to have a visit there from June to Septemer as the weather condition will be fine. the weather in May is also better. Take easy!

You may visit the following page for some itineraries information.

A friend of mine has been to Tibet this June. They hired a Jeep in Xining and traveled to Lhasa, then to Gyangtse and Shigatse. The trip costs him less than 2000 RMB!!! But normally, a visit to Tibet will cost about 5000 RMB.

Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Dalai Lama's Summer Palace shall of course be on your list. I would like to recommend you a visit to Tibet Museum in Lhasa, which shall not be missed.
