Hello

I am planning to visit Rongbuk monastery in tibet and then move on to lhasa. I am from india and hence plan to fly to kathmandu and then proceed ahead with some tour operator. I was also considering making arrangements from tour operator in tibet. My questions is

1) if i plan to approach tibet from kathmandu do i have to apply for chinese visa in india and tibet travel permit in india or

2) i was informed that if i plan to visit tibet through kathmandu the chinese visa issued in india is not valid and hence i may have to apply for chinese visa and tibet permit both in kathmandu

How do i go about it. Please help me clear the confusion

Regards

Hi Sumit,
the Chinese visa you apply from India is valid even if you go Kathmandu first.
as for the Tibet Travel Permit, individual foreign visitors are not allowed to visit Tibet, so your travel operator should handle it for you.

Hi Janice,
foreign visitor are not allow to visit Tibet individually, which means you have to join a tour group. a visa is not required when visiting Tibet, but a Tibet Travel Permit is required, and usually the travel agency will help you to get it.

Hi, I am looking at what options I have to tour Tibet with some friends. I am English and am in China on a business visa and my friends are Chinese. Is Tibet currently open to foreigners and would I be able to join tour that is designed for Chinese rather than foreigners? I would be looking to this tour at the end of September.

Thanks James.

Asked by Leng Giunta(India)

hi,
you don't have to go back to your own country, you can just apply the China visa in the Chinese Embassy in India.
to visit Tibet, you also need to apply a Tibet Travel Permit. as foreign visitors are not allowed to go to Tibet individually, so you need to join in a group tour to Tibet, and the travel agency will apply the Tibet Travel Permit for you.
