 I plan to travel to Tibet with my 3 friends, who are Hong Kong residents. I really want to avoid joining any tour and make this a semi-backpacking experience. So far, from the information I gathered, I am really confused and frustrated by the permit issue.

First of all, what is the difference between a Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) and a Alien Travel Permit (ATP)? I plan to got to Lhasa, then the basecamp of Mt. Everest and back to Lhasa. Which permit do I need?

Second, is it possible to just book plane tickets with the permits?

Third, although I hold a U.S. passport, I am Chinese and speak fluent Chinese. If I am able to get tickets with permits to Lhasa, what are my chances going beyond Lhasa without being accompanied by a travel agency guide?

If you hold a US passport, I'm afraid you need a Tibet Travel Permit to enter Tibet, but people with Hong Kong citizenship do not need to apply the Permit.

One permit is enough to cover every part of Tibet.

You can book flight tickets in advance but the tickets can't be issued without the presence of the permit.

apparently you have 3 days 'free-n-easy' in lhasa and then after you 'must have a guide' or join a travel group.

AS OF OCTOBER 1, 2006 A TRAVEL VISA TO ENTER TIBET IS NO LONGER NEEDED. THIS IS A PROMOTION BY THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT AS WAS POSTED ON THEIR WEBSITE

TRAVEL PERMITS ARE NO LONGER NEEDED FOR FOREIGNERS TO ENTER TIBET, SINCE ON OCT 1, THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT REMOVED THIS REQUIREMENT.
