Hi, I have always wanted to visit Lhasa and only have this period to travel. It would be too cold? Besides Lhasa Hotel, which is highly recommended by many, is there a cheaper but still rather good hotel to stay? Any recommendations on trip planning?

No, it's not cold at all. But you still need heavy cloth if you want to go to mountain areas. Beside Lhasa Hotel, there are many great hostels. You can read: http://www.tibettrip.com/lhasa/accommodation.htm

There are many more hotels then people will tell you about and you can find alot of them on asiarooms.com.
I dont know why people dont tell you the truth because there are lots of good cheep hotels in December for 35-38 US dollars a night that were just built in 1999 and 2002, 2004.
Here are just a few:
Hubei Hotel Lhasa was built in 2002. The Hubei hotel Lhasa is one of the newest 3-star hotels in Lhasa.
The lobby is large sized. It is a modern building.

I am going to China in December traveling to many cities. I have been to China more than a dozzen times but this will be my first trip to Xizang which is the provincial name for Tibet.

3 STAR AND SOME 4 STAR HOTELS IN LHASA, AND SHIGATSI AND GYANTSE IN DECEMBER CAN BE AS LESS AS 180 YUAN PER ROOM.

It's ok in Lhasa, not too cold. In fact, the winter in Lhasa is hotter than northeast China. If you want to go to other places, such as Everest and Namtso, it will be quite cold.
