Hello,
Is it possible to fly from Zhongdian (Yunnan) to Lhasa in mid-december (which day in the week?) and then take the Friendship Highway to Nepal? If not, is it possible to fly from Lhasa to Katmandu in december or January? Thanks for your advices.

No results about the flight from Zhongdian to Lhasa. Only Chengdu, Beijing, Xian and Hong Kong have the direct flights to Lhasa.
And if you joined a tour of some agent, it is unnecessary for you to think about or worry about that problem. And the most important is that it is not permmited to travel in Tibet by your own.
And generally speaking, take bus is wonderful. Most vehicle the travel agent arrange is bus. You will enjoy the scenery of the two sids.

Hello Didier,
I know there are some flights from Zhongdian to Lhasa in summer, but I think it might be not possible in winter because of the snow... And there are no bus either in winter to go to Deqin, or to Tibet (there are in summer!) from Zhongdian.
Maybe there's a direct flight from Kunming to Lhasa. I don't know where you wanna go, but if you go to Kunming (less than 1 day and 1 night from Zhongdian by bus), there you can ask a China travel agency in Kunming (now you can also call and ask the Camellia Hotel in Kunming). And if there's no flight to Lhasa you can go straight to Chengdu by train... From Chengdu, going to Lhasa is easier (in Traffic Hotel for instance you can buy a "pack" for Tibet: a one way flight ticket to Lhasa, included a groupe with a guide, a permit).

There are flights from Zhongdian to Lhasa twice a week for most of the year. They stop around spring festival, and of course, are dependent on the weather. If you're doing a flight search, make sure to check for the Diqing airport (the name of the airport in Zhongdian)

Has anyone heard of overland trips in 4X4s with a guide from Zhongdian to Lhasa? I was staying at the Camellia Hotel in Kunming about a year ago and in a back office was an agent who organised such trips. Needless to say that I have lost his card in my travels and have now decided that I want to do just that. Any information about any such agents would be useful.

I've just finished my tour going from Lhasa to Zhongdian by car early this month. It took 7 days to finish this tour and I would suggest you not to risk your life on this route. I was lucky not encounting any heavy rain the landslide which often blocked the way for a couple of days. Good luck to all of you!

I was in the Camelia Hotel back office just 5 minutes ago to ask about overland to Lhasa from Zhongdian. They told me it cost 5.000 y (around 500 euros) for a 7-8 days in a jeep without accomodation or food.
I'm planning to go from Kunming to Zhongdian through Dali and the tiger leaping gorge and then Zongdian and there take any tour to Tibet but anybody knows if there is anything cheaper than that???
By the way, Camelia's Tibet tour information email address is: qijia_chen@yahoo.com.cn
Cheers!

hello
there is one flight from Zhongdian/gyalthang to lhasa every day and also sleeper bus three times a week, the flight number might reduces late in the winder but won't stop completely. but the problem is that you can't take a bus without permits and i don't think anyone would dare to give you a overland permit and get yourself on a bus.
