Hello everybody! I would like to see some traditional Tibetan festivals when I visit Tibet. Who knows or even participated at those festivals with yak butter sculptures, the huge thangkas on mountains or even oracle dancing? When and where are they? Thanks a lot for your help! |

Festivals are held every month in the Tibetan calendar. The yak butter sculpture is held in 1st Tibetan month. Thangka festival is held between 1st and 2nd Tibetan month. Tibetan calendar is very similar to the Chinese lunar calendar. |

Thanks Esther! But where can I find them? Are they everywhere in Tibet or only at some special spots? |

Thangkas exhibitions at some famous monasteries like Drepung Monastery are more worth seeing since their collections are much more precious. |

Hello and thanks! I have to look for some more infos, especially the dates. What about this famous oracle dancing in one monastery which you get to see in several movies? Is it forbidden by CN government? Or these beautiful coloured yak butter sculptures which melt in the sun to show the restricted time of life? So pretty! |

Every 15th of the 1st moon of Tibetan Calendar the yak butter sculpture will be held in monasteries.

Hmm, what date is it following the Gregorian Calender? Is it in every monastery? I heard it is also in the Barkhor Area surrounding the Jokhang Temple. So what is the best time to see as many festivals as possible at once? |

Hi Buttercup! I heard of a famous Mask Dancing in the Dongzhulin Moanstery around Benzilan on the Yunnan Tibetan border. It is supposed to be in October. It looks like a oracle dance on the pictures! But maybe someone participated on this festival on this board???? |

The Tibetan calendar is much similar to that of the Chinese Lunar calendar. there is no restrict conversion. However, the first day of the lunar year may fall between 22 Jan to 19 February.
