I personally did not have a good time in Tibet and was rather disappointed. Mainly because of problems in Lhasa. I had to change hotels 3 times in the first 4 days for various reasons beyond my control while I was going through the altitude acclimation process. I had my camera stolen out of my backpack 1 min. after leaving my hotel (day 4). (wear it in front) However, after leaving Lhasa and going into the countryside, I felt completely safe and the people seemed honest and extremely good hearted. I MET OTHERS WHO ALSO HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH CRIME AS WELL...and began to notice that the police vans often had tourists or foreigners sitting in the back. I don't want to put any blame, but from my conversations it appears that the immigrants coming from outside of Tibet may be behind some of the problems. Lastly, somebody has to put an end to the cellphones and perhaps even cameras inside the sacred temples... It really is unfair to the monks who practice their faith as well as those of us who want to experience the sacred. Who am I to say, but imagine the same thing going on in the Vatican or Notre Dame... Good luck, and remember I may be in the minority... but mark my words, be ye wise in Lhasa... (yeah, I know,,, could be anywhere in China... I agree as well) Good luck... and don't let me discourage anybody, as beyond Lhasa is a unique country full of some of the most gracious people I have ever met.
