Hello, I am a college student on a budget who wants to visit Tibet (preferably near Lhasa) for 4-6 weeks during the summer of 2008. A couple of questions: Anyone want to join me? I'll be coming from Kathmandu (volunteering there). I heard you have to get another visa when coming from Nepal to China - is that true? Does anyone know of an inexpensive volunteer program working near Lhasa? Has anyone gone into Tibet without using a tour or outside organization? How did you get permits, where did you go? I am interested in taking the Qinghai Tibet train from Lhasa to probably Shanghai when I leave. Has anyone taken it? Where from/to? Where did you get tickets and how much were they? Any other information or advice people have would be appreciated. |

Let me answer some of your questions here! ''I'll be coming from Kathmandu (volunteering there). I heard you have to get another visa when coming from Nepal to China - is that true?'' Yes, that's true, no matter you have obtain a Chinese visa or not, you have to get a paper visa from the Chinese Embassy of Nepal when entering Tibet. ''Has anyone gone into Tibet without using a tour or outside organization? How did you get permits, where did you go?'' You have to be organized when traveling in Tibet. Before entering Tibet you must obtain a Tibet Permit only with which can you get the airplane tickets to Tibet. You can join a travel agency and let it do it for you, or apply it from the individual reception service center of Tibet directly, who will organize a trip for you. Look through this site if you still have questions. http://www.tibettrip.com/essential/documents.htm ''I am interested in taking the Qinghai Tibet train from Lhasa to probably Shanghai when I leave. Has anyone taken it? Where from/to? Where did you get tickets and how much were they?'' There is a direct train from Lhasa and shanghai, you can book the ticket from the train station 10 days in advance. Look through this to get the information about the train and the ticket. http://www.tibettrip.com/tibet-train-schedule.htm |
