We are going to China in September. We have our Chinese "L" Visa but the Chinese Embassy says we are NOT allowed into Tibet without getting the permit now and then filling out the Visa application process again here in Australia to get an updated Visa, which will cost us another $200. They say we will be in BIG trouble if we get a Tibet permit once there. Our travel agency say it is ok to get our permit once there. Who is telling me the truth?

yes, it is possible.
but you need to apply a China tourist visa and a Tibet Travel Permit before you go.
and individual tour to Tibet is not available for foreign visitors, so you need to go with a tour group. the travel agency will apply the Tibet Travel Permit for you.

I had a trip booked that was canceled for this reason so I am guessing it is true. I am looking also to make sure I am not being ripped off as it is a reputable tour company but it was last minute. I was supposed to leave next week. I have my visa for China but when you get there the company does a special permit for Tibet on arrival and was just told a few days ago we can't come in. It is because it is the 60th anniversary of the Chinese army entering Tibet and they don't want protesters.

I'm planning to go Tibet on Mid June 2011. According few China Travel agency, we must hire a tour guide and arrange Itinerary with them prior depart to Lhasa. Can I go without tour guide and just charter a car there? Heard the visa to entry Tibet is still yet open for foreigner right now. Any idea?

Hi Yong,

I have booked my tour on May 19 and submitted all my documents to the land operator in Tibet, also booked my air ticket. Travelling in on June 7, unfortunately, they just emailed me yesterday that trip is cancelled due to TTB Permit is unsuccessful. It should be due to the late submission and they claimed that changed of rules for foreigners travelling in. I have checked with a few others tour operators and said that submission should be done in at least 10 to 14 days prior to departure.

However, I am trying to check departure for a week later or mid June. I am doing the Lhasa Mt Kailash tour 15 days or more. Please let me know of your interest to form a group or others interested, please do let me know. Thanks much.

Asked by Robby(Malaysia)

hi Robby,
as mentioned in the above article, you need to hold a valid passport, a Chinese Toursit Visa, and a Tibet Entry Permit.
you can apply the passport in the immigration department of your country, and obtain the Chinese Tourist visa through the Chinese Embassy in your country.
as for the Tibet Entry Permit, you have to book a group tour to Tibet and the travel agency will handle permit for you, coz individual foreign visitors are not allowed to visit Tibet.

Hello we are travelling to China around 15 June 2011 and intend to fly in from Hong Kong to Xian and then travel slowly on/off by train to Lhasa. Can we enter Tibet individually as a couple husband and wife or do we need to still go as a group? Can other people join us to make a group? Once we are in Tibet do we need to hire a guide plus transport to travel around? Are there any organisations we can contact?

We are also planning to go from Lhasa to Katmandu by bus, but i have heard rumors that the bus is off limits for foreigners and that the only possibility is renting a land cruiser.

Hello,
I am from Malaysia.
I would be travelling to Guilin on 27 Sept 2009. Can I apply TTB at Guilin?
From Guilin, I would go to Chonqing.
If I would like to travel from Lhasa to Kamanthu, is TTB usable?
If not, can you suggest a method to go there?
Do I need to apply Double Entry Visa to China from Malaysia so I can go to Tibet (apart form the TTB)

Asked by HuiLan(Malaysia)

Thanks for your inquiry.

The TTB can only be acquired by travel agent. You cannot apply for that by yourself. For visit to China, you only need to appy for a single entry visa, as Tibet is a part of China. As you will travel from Lhasa to Katmandu, you also need to apply for a visa to Katmandu.

Asked by Donald Riedel(United States)

Before your departure from your country, you need to apply the tourism visa (L visa) to China, which takes about 5-7 working days. Apart from visa, you will also need the Tibet travel permit which is required by China government, which can only be handled by China travel agencies. This means you need to contract your Lhasa travel with a China travel agent. It takes about 7-10 working days to acquire the Tibet travel permit. You will also need a visa to Katmandu, while, the visa to Katmandu can be acquired when you arrive there.

Hi, Alexis
According to the latest regulation from TTB (Tibet Tourism Bureau), foreign tourists or Chinese tourists with foreign passport cannot travel to Tibet individually. So you will have to travel with a group to Tibet.
