Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relayed across Mt. Everest in May, 2008

The planning route of Beijing 2008 Olympic torch relay had been declared on Apr.26^th in Beijing. According to the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), the Olympic torch is planned to cross the Mt. Everest in May, 2008, which is based on the climate of the mountain.

The torch relay across the highest peak in the world, Mt. Everest is a promise that Beijing has made to the world when bidding for holding this great event. This is the first time that an Olympic torch will reach the peak, so how the torch will be relayed across the mountain is always a focus of the world.

It is said that on March 31, 2008, an Olympic torch kindling will be separated for Mt. Everest on the Olympic torch relay ceremony between Greece and China. Then the kindling will be sent to the Mt. Everest Base Camp under the escort team in late April. When the torch is relayed on Mt. Everest in May, the relay activity of the main torch within China will be stopped. When finished, the torch will be sent to Lhasa before it converges with the main torch on June 20, 2008.

The torch for Mt. Everest looks like the main torch 'Xiangyun (Lucky Cloud)', with special inner burning sets. The activity takes much account of the environmental problems, which is quite in accordance with the motif of Beijing Olympics. And the escort team of the torch on Mt. Everest has experienced much difficult mountaineering and received special hard trainings. Besides, the relay activity will be on live broadcast.
