Climate
The favorable location in the valleys of the middle Yarlung Tsangpo River endows the Shannan region with a pleasantly temperate climate. The annual average temperature is 5 C-8 C, with the highest 31 C and the lowest -18 C on record. June to August, which sees the highest temperature of the year, is likewise the most ideal travel season with the average temperature being around 20 C. As a matter of fact, with an average temperature of no lower than -18 C in December and January, winter travels to the Shannan region is also possible and travelers are likely to be rewarded with unique snow-covered highland scenery.
Influenced by a semi-arid climate, the annual precipitation of the Shannan region is 600mm (23.6 inches), with June to September covering 90% of the total. Mostly occurring at night, rain is not commonly an obstacle to one's travel, instead endowing a Shannan summer trip with a cool climate and clean fresh air.
Travel to Shannan in spring or autumn should be well prepared. Especially the wind and sand protection are required. Resulting from recent desertification of the Yarlung Tsangpo River Valley area, sandstorms have become a common feature during travels to the riverside areas.
Bank, Post and Telecom
A wide variety of mail services are provided by post offices throughout the Shannan region. Mobile communications and IC card telephones are available in most counties and towns. In the town of Tsedang, internet cafes cluster on Nedong Lu and Gesang Lu, attracting increasing numbers of young Tibetans to surf on the Internet. Branches of China Construction Bank and the Agricultural Bank of China are the only two banking corporations to be found here, so cash is recommended.
