Potala Palace: Snow City to Open on May 31st

It is reported that the first period of the maintenance on the Snow City in Potala Palace has been completed, and it will open to both domestic and oversea visitors on May 31st.

The Snow City refers to the lower parts obverse to Potala Palace, with an area of 3,340 square meters (0.8 acres). Now there are 22 ancient buildings remain to be found, including the former local government building of Tibet, the offices and residences of former aristocrats, officials, monks, as well as the serfs and workmen.

The Snow City now opens 13 scenic spots, including 12 ancient buildings and one tourist service center. There visitors can see hundreds of cultural relics, and the on-spot dynamic display of the distinctive Tibetan arts and culture, such as the making process of Tibetan food and drinks, sculptures, Thangkas, from which one can learn the Tibetan history and culture vividly.

It is said that the admission fee of the Snow City is priced at CNY 30 temporarily, which can be got at the ticket window of the South Gate of Potala Palace.

In addition, the second period of reconstruction of the Snow City will be finished in 2008, when the Treasure Hall, Western Sutra Printing House, Relics of Granary and other buildings will be open.

Nanchang Special Tourist Train to Enter Tibet Next Month

With the opening of Tibet Railway, many travelers are desiring to have a look of the mysterious land of Tibet by train. It is reported that Nanchang Railway Station will dispatch a first special tourist train to Tibet on June 9th, which will provide a good chance for people in Nanchang City, capital of Jiangxi Province, to see Tibet.

This train will be equipped with 12 compartments of soft sleepers, with a capacity of over 400 passengers. Without direct railway between Nanchang and Tibet, passengers have to transfer another train (N917 Xining – Lhasa) via Xining. The train will depart at 18:05 on June 9th at Nanchang and arrive at Xining at 10:00 on June 11th. As one of the most advanced trains in China, this train will also offer oxygen to travelers to avoid the mountain sickness.

The tour will cost 11 days, including 4 days on the train and others for sightseeing on the pretty Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The charge for the travel is CNY 3,970, including fees on accommodation, transportation, dining, scenic spots and others.

Travelers are further demanded to have a physical examination to guarantee that they are fit for the Tibet travel.

Transportation of Everest Base Camp to Improved

To ensure the success of the 2008 Beijing Olympic torch relay across Mt. Everest, the road between Everest Base Camp and Tingri County in Shigatse will be rebuilt into bituminous macadam.

This section of road, with a length of 108 kilometers (112 miles), is the only way leading to Mt. Everest. It is said that this project will be invested with a budget of 150 million CNY, and will strictly accord with the environmental friendly concept. The rebuilt two-way road will be of a high standard, with guardrails on either side.

Tourist Distributing Centers to Established in Tibet

According to Xinhua News Agency, several tourist distributing centers will be established in Tibet, which will serve as consultants on tourist information for individual travelers.

With the opening of Tibet Railway, individual tourists to Tibet are increased largely. As most of them lack information and tips on Tibet travel and have no travel guides to consult, the distributing centers will come to help. They mainly provide references for tourist attractions, tour itineraries, travel times, admission fees, tips for hotels, restaurants, shopping and transportation, as well as knowledge for guaranteeing travel safety and private interests.

In Lhasa, the tourist distributing centers will be established in Gonggar Airport, Lhasa Railway Station, Barkhor Street, Lhasa Hotel, Tibet Hotel and other tourist spots.

Namtso Lake: Admission Ticket Renewed as Postcard

Since May 19th, the admission ticket of Namtso Lake can be used as a special postcard, with no additional postal charge involved.

It is said that the admission tickets of scenic spots in Tibet are very popular among tourists, for they are vividly printed with the introduction of the scenic spots, as well as practical maps of routes and beautiful pictures.

The renewed admission ticket of Namtso Lake has a fixed stamp at the top right corner, which can be conveniently mailed to others as a postcard.

Nyingchi: Luopa Minority & Tibetan Medicine Cultural Festival to Held on May 28th

The Luopa Minority & Tibetan Medicine Cultural Festival will be held in Miling County, Nyingchi on May 28th, when visitors can see various splendid performances of Luopa Minority and exhibitions of Tibetan medicine.

Luopa is the minority that has the least population in China, who are mostly concentrated in Nanyi Village of Miling. The research of Tibetan Medicine in Miling, which can be dated back to 7th century, also has a long history. In addition, the blooming yellow peonies in May in Zhagonggou Ditch, Nanyi Village are also in the favor of visitors. To display all of these distinctive cultures and tourist resources, the local government has decided to hold the Luopa Minority & Tibetan Medicine Cultural Festival this year.

The activities of the festival include the display of Tibetan and Luopa art performances, costumes, and other folk cultures, visiting folk villages, exhibition of the culture of Tibetan Medicine, as well as seeing wild yellow peonies.
