2008 Beijing Olympic Tickets Starts Booking

Since Apr.15, Beijing 2008 Olympic Tickets has started to be sold within three periods. People in Tibet can get the tickets through three ways: the Tibet branches of Bank of China, the official website and the appointed hot line service.

Bank of China is the only authorized Chinese bank to sell the Olympic tickets. There are four branches in Tibet: Tibet Branch, Shigatse Branch, Nyingchi Branch and Shannan Branch. In addition, the official website www.tickets.beijing2008.cn and the hot line 95566 of Tibet Branch are also available to get the tickets

The sale of the tickets will be divided into three periods: the first period is April – June, 2007, when tickets can be booked from the official website and branches of Bank of China, and an account of Bank of China or a VISA card of any bank is demanded for the payment; the second period is October – December, 2007, when the booking system of hot line and payment by cash will be opened, but a successful buyer can only get a confirming letter of the tickets; the last period is April – September, 2008, when the tickets can be directly got from the Bank of China.

It is reported that more than 7 million tickets will be on sale, over half of which are sold within China. And each one can only get one ticket for the opening and closing ceremony, and 2 to 5 tickets for others.

Qinghai-Tibet Railway to Speed Up

According to Lhasa Railway Station, with the national speed-up of Chinese railways from Apr.18, the running time of trains from Lhasa to Xining will be shorten by more than 2 hours, while the return trip will be shorten by more than 1 hour.

At the same time, the departure time of Train N918 (Lhasa -Xining) will be changed from 9:32 to 11:20, while Train N917 (Xining-Lhasa) changed from 20:07 to 20:28.

Though the Tibet Railway has some changes in the schedule, ticket fees and routes of the trains will remain the same. In addition, the railway still does not sell tickets without seats and oxygen is still provided during the trip between Lhasa and Golmud, Qinghai.

Lhasa Liuwu Bridge to Run on May 1st

It is said that the first modern overpass of Tibet, Lhasa Liuwu Bridge is almost completed and expected to run on May 1st. The launch of the bridge will make it quite easy to travel between Lhasa Railway Station and the city district.

Lhasa Liuwu Bridge, 1,660 meters (1 mile) long and 29 meters (32 yards) wide, consists of the Northern Overpass, the Main Bridge and the Southern Approach. At present, the main structure has already been finished, and the road of the northern part has been paved with bitumen, with the southern part on the point of completion. Now some additional works, such as the installation of the road fences, road flagstones, road lights, road paintings, and the green plans of the surroundings, are being carried out. These works are estimated to be finished on Apr. 25th.

The Bridge, which links the city district and the railway station, will shorten the travel time between these two areas from over 30 minutes to 10 minutes more or less.

Train Schedule of Tibet Railway to Change

With the sixth speed-up of Chinese railways, Tibet Railway will also carry out new schedules from Apr. 18th.

According to Lhasa Railway Station, the departure time of trains to Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Chengdu, Guangzhou and other cities will be changed, while the running time will be shortened by 1 to 3 hours. And the departure time of trains to Lhasa will also be changed.

However, travelers are guaranteed that the charges for the train tickets will remain the same. Hereunder is the new train schedule.

Shannan: 12 Cultural Relic Sites Newly Discovered

According to Shannan Cultural Relics Bureau, 12 new cultural relic sites have been discovered in Shannan Region recently, including Buddhist temples, stupas, rock paintings among others.

These cultural relic sites were found during a field survey along a rebuilt road line, which started from the first temple of Tibet - Samye Monastery in Dranang County to Gonggar County, winding nearly 80 km. (50 miles). The site that is mostly worth mentioning is the ancient residence relic and the food-gathering spot discovered in Changguo Ruins in Gonggar County, a large Neolithic Relics in Tibet. In addition, archaeologists also found an ancient stone pagoda, a stupa, an ancient building relic, a Tibetan Buddhist temple, a Tibetan Buddhist nunnery, four ancient cliff sculpture sites and a rock painting site.     

These cultural relics are evaluated quite helpful for the research on the history of Tibetan culture, nationality, economy, Han-Tibet relationship as well as the environment changes of the plateau.

Sino-Nepal Road: Nyalam-Zhangmu Section Being Repaired

The repair work of Nyalam-Zhangmu Section of Sino-Nepal Road has been started recently. This project will greatly improve the transportation between Lhasa and the national major port Zhangmu Town.

The project extends from Nyalam County to the Friendship Bridge of Zhangmu in Shigatse, with a whole distance of 42.017 km. (26 miles). This road, which was initially paved with gravels, was in bad condition and easily exposed to snow, rain and other disasters. The rebuilt road will be widen 7.5 m. (8.2 yd.) and paved with bitumen, with a speed limit of 40 km. (24.8 miles) per hour twice as before.

In addition, the Tingri-Nyalam Section of Sino-Nepal Road is also about to be restored this year.??
