Lhasa-Shigatse Railway to Built This Year

According to the government official of Tibet, the branch line of Qinghai-Tibet Railway -- Lhasa-Shigatse Railway will be built this year, and the whole project is predicted to be finished in 2010.

Lhasa-Shigaste Railway, with a whole distance of 254 km. (158 miles), will be invested with a budget of 11 billion CNY more or less preliminarily. The launch of the project will first link the two biggest cities of Tibet, Lhasa and Shigatse by railway. In view of the ecologic and environmental problems, the designers of the project have also thought out many ways. For example, 33 channels are planned to be opened along the common routes of wild animals for them to pass easily. Bridges instead of roads will be built in the frozen and wet land zones. As to the resources, electric and solar energies will be applied in the railway station and the wastes will be dealt with collectively.

Flights of Chengdu-Nyingchi to Increase to Five Shifts a Week

It is reported that to meet the rise of the air market demand, Air China plans to increase another two aircrafts of A319 and one of A330 between Nyingchi and Chengdu in 2007, thus the scheduled flights will be raised from two to five from the late March this year.

Nyingchi Airport, which is said to demand the most on the wingmanship among all the Chinese airports, was launched in September of 2006 and opened the airline to Chengdu first. Due to the low altitude and pleasant climate of Nyingchi, the region is often selected as the first destination for travelers to acclimatize themselves in Tibet. So even the 'Gold Bridge in the Sky of the Roof the World'–Chengdu-Lhasa Airline, which is also operated first by Air China, cannot satisfy the needs of all travelers itself.

Chengdu-Lhasa Airline has the safety records for 42 years until March, 2nd this year. At present, the flights in Tibet operated by Air China have reached to over 90 shifts per week on average, and the transport capacity has increased from over 4,000 passengers in 1965 to 787,000 in 2006.??????

Tibet Railway Brings Much to the Chinese New Year

It is reported that with the opening of Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the communication between Tibet and the inner land of China is increased considerably. During the Tibetan New Year and Chinese Spring Festival, both the Tibetans and people in the central land have more choices to spend the important festivals.

For Tibetans, each year they have to stay at home and plan the festival by the traditional customs. But this year, the Tibetan New Year and Chinese Spring Festival meet together, and many Tibetans walk down the plateau and choose to breathe the fresh festive air in the inner land. Learnt from their words, this owes much to the convenient transportation brought by the Tibet railway. Some take this opportunity to see their long-yearning relatives while others travel there simply for vacation.

In addition, many travelers, not only the Chinese, but also oversea tourists all crowd to Tibet to feel about the exotic Tibetan New Year. An eyeful of Tibetan goods in the bustled market, a visit to the local family, a taste of the Tibetan festive food and drinks, and an appreciation of the brilliant songs and dances all bring an interesting and lasting impression to the visitors.

According to the statistics of China Tibet Tourism Bureau, since the opening of Tibet Railway on July 1, 2006, Tibet has received almost 2 million Chinese and oversea tourists until the end of the year, gaining a 52.5% increase compared with the same periods in former years.

Travel agencies involved introduced that fewer tourists came to Tibet since November in the past, and almost no Tibet tour group was arranged around Spring Festival. But more and more visitors, especially foreign visitors, came to Tibet this year because of the cheaper budget during the winter, the much cheaper tickets of scenic spots, and the convenient and comfortable Tibet Railway. Tourists from Japan, Korea, and Malaysia as well as Guangdong, Beijing, Gansu, Yinchuan, etc. are now traveling actively around Tibet Plateau.
