Transportation of Southern Shigatse Blocked Due to Snowfall

It is reported that due to the heavy snows these days, the mountains and roads between Nyalam County, Zhangmu Port and some sections of 318 National Highway in Shigatse have been blocked.

According to the Tibet Meteorological Station, heavy snows to blizzards had been falling down continuously from Mar. 12 to Mar. 14 between the southern regions of Ngari and southwestern regions of Shigatse. The heaviest snows in Nyalam County have reached 43 mm. (1.7 in.).

New Chinese Ancient Stone Sculptures Discovered in Chamdo

It is reported that a group of Chinese ancient stone sculptures have been discovered in Tagtse Hamlet, Lhatse Village, Palbar County of Chamdo.

The discovered sculptures number over 140 pieces, most of which are smaller ones with a diameter of 25 cm. (0.8 ft.), while the largest are 85 cm. (2.8 ft.) high and 64 cm. (2 ft.) wide. They are mainly engraved on the separate rocks or pebbles, in images of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, guardians of Buddhist sutras and other Buddhist patterns. The sculptures seem quite lifelike, which can be found evidently traits of colored drawings. According to the appraisal of relative experts, these are the remains of sculptures in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) of China.

Small Potala Palace to Built in Tibet Soon

To deal with the increasing tourist flow brought by the Tibet Railway, Lhasa has planned to build a Small Potala Palace, and on-line ticket booking shall be opened soon.

It is said that the Small Potala Palace will be built near the present site of Potala Palace from the latter half of this year. The Small Potala is designed much smaller, and will exhibit some cultural relics of Potala. With the visual and audio facilities, it will allow the visitors to learn the history of Potala and to get a panoramic view of the palace.

In addition, for coping with the problem that tickets for Potala are always in great demand, the relative department decides to open the on-line booking soon so that tourists can get the tickets easily in advance. And it is guaranteed that the admission fee will remain the same in despite of the frequent flow.

Ngari to Build the Highest Airport in the World

It is said that Ngari is likely to launch the highest airport in the world on Oct.1, 2010.

The airport, at an altitude of 4,300 m. (14,108 ft.) more or less, is pitched in Shiquanhe Town, the administrative center of Ngari, which is over 1,780 km. (1106 miles) away from Lhasa. For the rugged road conditions and severe climates, Ngari can only be passed through generally from May to October in a year. The build of the airport will greatly improve the inconvenient transportation of Ngari.

According to Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), a total of 52 billion CNY will be invested to the construction of airports in the western regions of China during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan period (2006-2010), including 37 newly built airports, 6 migrated airports and 31 expanded airports. The other newly built airports include Sanjiangyuan Airport in Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Region, Qinghai and Kangding Airport in Garze Tibetan Autonomous Region, Sichuan. And the airports in Inner Mongolia will be increased to 12 and those in Xinjiang to 20 in 2010. - 4:51 A.M. EST, Mar 12, 2007


Pome, a New Destination in Tibet for Tourists

It is reported that since the opening of Tibet Railway and the Nyingchi Airport, tourists to Pome had been increased considerably in the last year. And with the further development of the tourist market of Pome, the county has gradually become a more and more popular destination for travelers.

Pome, reputed as 'Switzerland of Tibet', is an enchanting county of Nyingchi Region. Historically it was a strong independent kingdom occupying the southeastern Tibet and returned to be the prefecture of Nyingchi until 1986. The famous scenic areas here include its administrative centre Zhangmu Town, Songzong Town, Guxiang and Yiong Village, among others.

It is recorded that in 2006, all the hotels and guest houses of Pome received 57,778 travelers in total, including 421 visitors outside the Chinese Mainland. Its tourist income amounts to over 16.4 million CNY, increasing 28.42% compared to that of 2005. This year, the government of Pome has invested much to improve its tourist environment. And it is estimated that travelers here will be increased on a large scale.
